How  can I download data, which is freely released for research, from worldwide project?

You can visit the page:

Then, you can define an area for your interest.  For example,  an area is simply defined for region of Alpine-Himalayan Collision Zone in coordinates:

20 - 120 East in degrees and 10-80 North in degrees.

Then,  the data is appeared for releasing in SEGY format after click VIEW RESULTS, which were attached.  This is a data you can take and work for your senior project if you like just for region of Alpine-Himalayan.  If you like, you can play with the region and find some of other different data which is acquired through finalized research projects.   If one of you having experience on data analysis by presently available well-known software such as Geoframe or Kingdom, then it is suggested that one can try to analyses any kind of data for different purposes in research.

Then, we can ask collaboration between ESD of KFUPM and Schlumberger or other companies to have you supporting on the use of data interpretation.  Because, oil-field data is not allowed from any company like Schlumberger unless we are permitted by Ministry of Petroleum.  Then, we should be realistic and ask some companies in Earth Science Sector such as Schlumberger or Saudi Aramco to cooperate with your project regarding their expertise and guidance of using their software.

What kind of software we have for analysis of seismic data?

We have a new software named KINGDOM, provided ten licenses which works in PC and you can use it for analysis for any kind of data.  The link for software is given from the site:

That is an additional options for you.

What kind of  factors affecting my grade or success in conducting my senior project?

Please note that I will continue considering any effort for grading you later:

a) Timely attendance to class, not after instructor: Students are suggested to be in class before instructor or on time.

b) Timely communicate or contribute to ongoing discussion through e-mail: You are supposed to provide a feedback or suggest any innovative idea which might pose a synergy through your research group.   Try your best to put a different perspective on any issue under discussion through e-mail following discussion in research team. Your contribution through e-mail is significantly asked to discuss any detail of your project regarding method, results and project design.  Otherwise, your contribution might be poor to develop projected idea of senior project.  Thus, you are nominated as a person with poor contributor.

c) Timely providing assignments:  Instructor has no responsibility to remind you about the deadline after any assignment has been given to you.  You are responsible to keep your works on submitting on time.

I should not tell you that 80% is the official requirement for attending weekly to consultancy class and laboratory in case we decide to meet.  Hence, any student exceeding three absences for both class and laboratory sessions will be awarded a “DN” grade for this course.  Also, let me know for regular meeting time, not later tomorrow.  Nothing is accepted for excuse unless you provide an official excuse through the Deanship of Student Affairs.

What  is the significance of Senior Project for my future carrier?

It is a time for students conducting a senior project in which it can be part of individual project or collaborative project.  Collaborative project makes a good way for anyone to learn many things faster than one can learn through individual project.  Thus, best of research is always resulted from a team-based work.  Thus, students, who are cooperative with industry or other researcher, are always appeared to be with their superior attitudes.

...............................................................................................................
I have asked you that you should make a time for first meeting. Please note that this is one hour for meeting and plus five hours for field work or lab  work. If any of you are not visiting me today, you will take first absence of Senior Project. You can come to visit me individually also to express your interest for your senior project. I am here today except lunch time.
Please consider that Senior Project is the most serious class you have ever taken since you will test your previous knowledge or background to conduct something individually.

Dear friends,

I have constructed a group list of Senior Project and want you using this list actively to communicate each other on what you have to share or discuss.

Background
I have just made a search on the use of geophysics for groundwater exploration and recognized that the below site seems providing a full released report which might you allow a good starting for you understanding background of geophysics in use of ground exploration:

How can I  propose distinguish ideas to construct a research project?

A good project design is based on mutually and continuously discussion and finding some common points which trigger to establish a research team.  Otherwise, primitive ideas for conducting a joint research can not be matured unless bilateral discussion is accomplished.  Literature review and seeking some remaining gaps in region or world make you help to detect some research lines.

.....................................................................................................................

Dear All,
Please look at our previous experience through beach from the site:

http://faculty.kfupm.edu.sa/ES/oncel/FieldTripGeop202.pdf

The field work above has been done old-seismic equipment with 12 channels with two shooting. Now, we have 48 channel seismic equipment and providing high quality seismic data with multiple shooting which should be at least 7. Then, we can expect to have a better work. Slides 6,7 shows changes in 1-D Shear-wave model and 2D P-wave velocity model.

I have attached a paper regarding an integrated works of resistivity and seismic, which might help you in preparing your proposal. Figure 1 , which is attached  paper, indicates a good example how to prepare a field design. It is a good idea to use same lines but different colors as:

SL 1: Seismic Line 1
RL 1: Resistivity Line 1

In addition to this, I suggest you adding one line as:

GL 1: Gravity Line 1

You can also use the same points to measure gravity values. Then, I suggest you to look for the paper from library titled as:

Ronald A. van Overmeeren
A combination of electrical resistivity, seismic refraction, and gravity measurements for groundwater exploration in Sudan Geophysics (September 1981), 46(9):1304-1313 GeoRef Record

...part of a groundwater project...resistivity, seismic refraction, and gravity...of fresh groundwater in the eastern...problem, seismic refraction work was...resistivity, seismic refraction, and gravity...measurements for groundwater exploration...

Then, title for your senior project we can propose as:
Application of geophysical methods for groundwater contamination in KFUPM Beach

Please note that I suggested you to consider areas of flat and sand-dune for making geophysical profiles.

Geophysical Methods, which are a part of title here, are electrical resistivity, seismic refraction, and gravity measurements. Then, you should separate roles for getting a different responsibility for each of geophysical methods as:

Student 1: seismic refraction (Hassan?)
Student 2: electrical resistivity (Ahmad)
Student 3: gravity (Ali?)
Student 4: shear wave? (Omar..)

If Abdurrahman want to be a part of this project, he can make reflection through the same line but he wants to work in VSP.

Please discuss, suggest and improve suggested ideas and then share through e-mail? Please send me your one page first draft of your project proposal due next Wednesday for review. Your proposal should be separate even the area or purpose seems the same, as expected for your final report?

Good luck with your project.

Best wishes,

Subject: Re:
What  is feedback?

Semantic meaning of feedback is to provide advice. criticism about how successful or or useful something is. Thus, any kind of suggestion or comments through any drafted work is always helpful to have a milestone in research.   In briefly, no way to make a cooperation with somebody unless he provide you a feedback on time.

....................................................................................................................

Dear Omar,
Thanks for your e-mail. Most important thing is to develop a field design which includes the position of profiles and field schedule. Please make it those soon and include your one-page proposal due to this Wednesday. Including or extracting new technique is not so big problem but you should explain clearly what you might conduct a work for to where to search? For example, you should make clear for such thing:

a) Profile Length? 100 m?
b) Number of Profiles? 6?
c) Profile Design? Horizontal and Transverse Profiles?
d) Area of research through Flat and Sand- dune? What will be distance between
profiles? Why?
e) Field Schedule: Once in week? Date, Day? It is urgent since we should
ask for permission of technician and cars from Department?

Such kind of things are requiring you to read more about the potential of  geophysics and previous works which have been done in beach.

Good luck.

Regards,

Ali Oncel

Good afternoon Dr.Ali,

We have sufficient time to wait until the Resistivity-meter works well,  we can start with the seismic Refraction, regarding data  acquisition, processing & interpretation, after that, we can resume with  the electrical method.  otherwise, we can replace it by using GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar),  and I think that the department has a new one also, and I hope to be
 available to the student activities.

Assignment 2: Present your initial proposal

Dear Ali,
Thanks for your e-mail. I have checked your one page proposal and can make some preliminary suggestions:
a) Motivation: Tell about a couple of something which motivates you to conduct such kind of work.
b) Region: Tell about a region why it is important to work there.
c) Background: Report some of previous works made a succeed regarding your purpose, thus positive results encourage you selecting methods.
d) Outcome: What you expect to find and show up in final?
e) Field Works: How many profiles are required to complete your work and how many days you should work in the field? Make a schedule for field work and report me what you need from the department of ESD we might provide you supporting your work?

I hope such things might help your revising your proposal.
Please prepare me five minutes presentation for defending your proposal next week, then we can discuss. My suggestions are valid for other students of Geop402.

Thanks.

Best wishes,

Ali

Dear All,
Let's meet 11 am on Wednesday for our weekly regular meeting since Abdurrrahman and Omar confirmed the time is OK.

Hamid- Could you please let me know we might have any vacant class or room in Building 3?  I think a room or class might be better for us in Bld 3 rather than Bld 26, since we plan to make joint meeting with Dr. Cesar, from Schlumberger,  who might be with us  for some of our meeting as long as his schedule is fine.  On the other hand, we might make some of regular meeting in Schlumberger.   Also, this week we might make a joint meeting and Dr.Cesar might be with us to discuss the detail of joint project as:

a) Experiments: Seismic and Resistivity
b) Instruments and Software
c) Profile Design in Region of Study
d) Schedule of Field Work
e) Effective/Creative Participation of KFUPM and Schlumberger
f) Expected Outcome

Ebu Cihad- As TA of Geop-402 and technician, you are invited to participate to our meetings.

We have a program which makes estimation of one or two dimensional calculation of shear waves.  Please check computers with the PC at our PC laboratory.  The program is based on the works on below works and you are suggested to read and understand:

Another program we have which is used to 2D map of P-wave velocity regardless of data which is reflection or refraction and the name of program is Seis-2D.  Please check the computer for the program with computers in the PC lab.  The source for program you can read from the paper which is based on PhD thesis of Dr.Satish from Optim Company.

I will also try to give you a tutorial to use those a couple of programs next week.  Also, you can find several applications of those programs from the listed papers:

he discussion on the use of above papers are provided from my class page:

On the other hand, you will use another program which is named by OMEGA which you are trained by Dr.Cesar.

Finally, your senior project is based on using three kinds of program.  It seems that you have a full semester with many things regarding your project.

2) Resistivity Data Acquisition: November 17-21, From Monday to Friday

Please let me know if I could provide you for any excuse letter from my site regarding your senior project.  One week ago prior to each acquisition, you are given a preparatory lecture on geophysical equipments.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regarding Omar's question, I wanted to write this up the task during the time of data analysis.  Our priority is first to conduct field work and give you an experience in the field regarding field design and conducting experiment.  Even we are promised to have resistivity, we should put concern regarding the use of resistivity.  Following a couple of tutorials regarding reflection, refraction tomography and Shear wave based on Microtremor, we can talk about more sharing responsibility.

Now, it is concern for us to finalize first part of project which is Data Acquisition.  Please make your time available and try to get an excuse to participate to field work considering schedule of Dr.Cesar.  First part is most important thing for you all.  Actually, we might work in six seismic lines, then you can take one of those lines and make analysis of your data. Then, we can compare your analysis and see what and why something has  changed through profiles.

In summary, I suggest you to work together in the field and then take one line for analysis to analyze several types of data with well-known software.

Please make your time free during time for field work.  Let me know if I could help you more.  To my sense, I suggest you to take an excuse during the field work and work full time if you could.

See you next Wednesday with your short presentation regarding "Integrated
Methods in Geophysics".

Thanks for your question.

Regarding previous question's Omar and my discussion with Dr.Cesar on your responsibility, we will make a 3D data acquisition and you might have get an experience to conduct such kind of experiment in the field. Then, you are going to be divided into main groups:

a) Seismic
b) Electric

You are supposed to work with data for one line, not for entire data which
is acquired in 3D.

I accept Omer for second group since he already nominated himself. Let me nominate also yourself through e-mail. We can discuss detail in later during our next joint meeting.

According to the all information which you have sent up to now, we have seismic and geoelectric applications, so we should divide our self into two main groups: one group working on the seismic and the other group on the electric resistivity. This will be less time consuming ,I think, and more fairly for the students who are more interested in one method over the other. So, I nominate my self in the 2nd group, since I want to improve my knowledge in processing and re-processing the data collected by Syscal-R1 plus switch, based on what I have learned in the last spring summer. Finally, the time work is very important, as I have told you in the previous massage!!!!!!!!!  Again, this is all from my own opinion, and I hope the other students to share the agreement with me , otherwise , another suggestion is made.
