Oh, and if you have time, you can also learn CSS, DHTML, XHTML, WML, DOM, WAP, SOAP, XShemema, Xforms, VBScript, JavaScript, Flash... shall I go on? You can learn a lot online -- let's just leave it at that. While w3schools.com provides a good tutorial-driven start for beginners, it's not a bad place for experts to re-master coding skills, either. Learn everything you need to know about Web coding, browsers, software, and graphics. It's never too late to learn something all over again. Unless you're an old dog. In which case, you're totally pooched.

Master of Magic

Master of Magick

July 2000

The first thing each of the judges did when reviewing your site was to reach for their bookmark file to save the location of this incredible resource you have created!  Several judges stated that they were going to return again and again to read all the wealth of information presented in your incredibly easy to use resource.

We realize that with the amount of time and energy you must expend on this site that you have given not just information to your viewers, but a part of yourself.  You have kept the focus of the site on the content where it belongs, made it all easy to understand, and not littered it up with unnecessary graphics that increase load time. What you have accomplished is "one stop shopping" for anyone looking to learn the art of being a webmaster from the beginner to the advanced.

Students of your school will no doubt sing your praises for years to come and many of them will earn recognition that will partially belong to you because of the help you offered them to learn their skills.

We thank you for your hard work and your dedication to the internet community and we declare you, Jan Egil Refsnes, to be a Master of Magick!  Congratulations!

WebBuilder - Site of the week

March 2000

Beginners will find the Web development tutorials at W3Schools helpful. The site explains the basics of several Web technologies, including HTML, Dynamic HTML, XML, XHTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), JavaScript, Active Server Pages (ASP), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), and Wireless Markup Language (WML). Although the "school" metaphor is used, there are no exercises for students, and sometimes the teachers ought to explain concepts more clearly. In one interesting section, the site authors set forth their vision of the future of distributed applications on the Internet and the guidelines that developers should follow to ensure that this vision becomes a reality. The site is run by Refsnes Data, a Norwegian Internet software development and consulting company.

REFSNESDATA.NO (now W3Schools.com)

The name of this web site is "RD Site Builder." This is a very attractive looking web site. It is very navigable. It is loaded with information. Want to got to school? Check these categories out: and "GO TO SCHOOL:"

  • HTML School
  • CSS School
  • Scripting School
  • ASP School
  • XML School
  • XHTML School
  • Web Applications

All information in this web site is for training only. Reviewing a couple of REFSNESDATA.NO schools presentation, it is evident much thought has been put into the presentation courses.

This is a classic web site. You can almost say everything is "right" about this web site. Navigation is great. Easy to read. Good table of contents. Pleasing color combination. Fast loading. It would be difficult to find any "wrongs" about the way this web site is designed. An absolute site to review for any beginner learning how to design web pages that are effective and do not contain a parade of bells and whistles.

Editor, AGORA-Web Site World.

Reviews of the Best High-Tech Sights on the Net!

RD Site Builder (now W3Schools) - Monday 10/Jan/2000 by Tina Gasperson

Kids love to find ways to get out of going to school. But when you get older, you're always looking for ways to get back in school. It takes maturity to realize that education is a good and desirable thing. This Norwegian site offers no less than seven different Web-building tutorials which they call schools--gotta go, I think I hear the bell ringing.

I was originally referred to the XML (Extensible Markup Language) school portion of this site, and trust me, that alone would be sufficient material for a review. When this guy says "all about XML," he ain't kidding. The explanations are clear and concise, with only minor glitches in the Norwegian to English translation.

What's really nice is that it doesn't stop there. If you are just getting started, don't start with the XML--head to the HTML school first for your elementary education. You'll learn exactly what the World Wide Web is, and how browsers fetch Web pages so we can view them. It then goes on to explain tags, why you should use the latest version of HTML, and how to upload your pages to a Web server.

There's also an easy-to-understand explanation of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Makes you want to go try it for yourself. And don't forget the scripting, ASP (Active Server Pages), and XHTML (Extensible HyperText Markup Language). By the time you make it through all the great schools here, you'll know Web building inside and out. Another really nice feature is the absence of animated ad buttons or banners here. There are plenty of ads, but no blinking or moving. I greatly appreciate that, and so should you.

Check it out
