1. Introduction to Network Design

module_1.0.ppt

OPNET Modeling and Simulation, Click here for instructions on running OPNET on CCSE Sun machines

module_1.1.ppt

module_1.2.ppt

Campus Network Design

2. Network Measurements

Introduction to SNMP

Famous and Interesting OIDs

SNMPUTIL

GetIF and STG

A visit to http://www.caida.org/tools/taxonomy/worktaxonomy.xml#linkview

Activities:

* Play with GetIF, SNMPUTIL, STG, MRTG Software Measurement Tools..

This is a team effort.  You must decide the most suitable tool for taking measurements for 24 hours from the routers and switches.  Practice. Practice. Practice. NOTE: You are welcome to use some other network measurement tools such as: NAI Sniffer, HPOpenView, Router Stats, Scotty, etc.

3. Analytical Modeling

Queuing Analysis by Stallings

Example: Applying MM1 to Single Network Link

Queueing for fun

Modeling Switch, Router, Server, Workstations, and Links

Putting it all together

Using Pings to Verify Network Latency

Activities:

* Read Stallings's QA book

* Play with animation of a transmission link at http://poisson.ecse.rpi.edu/~vastola/pslinks/perf/hing/mm1animate.html

* Start thinking how you would use these analytical techniques for your project

4. The Art of Network Design

Understanding High-Speed LAN Technologies

Making Technology Choices: ATM vs. Ethernet

ATM vs. GbE

Selecting Shared, Fast, and Gigabit Ethernet

Calculating Ethernet Network Diameter

Determining the Capacity of Ethernet?
