Course description:

This is a distance learning short course, offered by SPS, during the month of Jumada-II/ Rajab, 1439. It is intended for students with a background in physics or chemistry.

The course introduces  the Kinetic Theory of Gases, both from the classical thermodynamics perspective and from the statistical physics.

Both perspectives should establish two realities for the monatomic ideal gas:

p V = N k T, and

U = 3/2 N k T

Though students are expected to have studied some thermodynamics, the Instructor will try to re-introduce for the whole subject as relevant to the aim of the course.

Students will learn about probabilities, partition functions, degeneracy and density of states. As well, they will reach the essential target relations using thermodynamic potentials (e.g., internal energy, Gibbs function, Helmholtz function, enthalpy) and variables (temperature, volume, pressure, entropy…etc.).

Mathematics will be used thoroughly.
