Microsoft FrontPage 2000

FrontPage 2000 is an HTML editor that is suitable for small projects, not for heavy Web site design.

If you know Word, you know FrontPage. The program has a well known user interface, and for people who are familiar with Word, FrontPage is easy to learn and maintain. FrontPage has a very good site administration.

FrontPage has four work windows: normal, HTML code, frames, and a page preview.

FrontPage 2000 has a limited support for DHTML and database functions.

Macromedia Dreamweaver

Dreamweaver is an HTML editor for professional Web site design.

The program allows advanced design, without dealing with HTML code all the time. Dreamweaver leaves imported code alone. The program also has a function that "cleans up" HTML files created with Word 2000. 

Dreamweaver supports advanced DHTML, and advanced possibilities for layers, animation and multimedia.

Macromedia Dreamweaver UltraDev

Dreamweaver UltraDev is an HTML editor for professional Web site design.

The program contains the same features as Dreamweaver. In addition UltraDev supports dynamic generated pages and databases. The program understands server-based scripting languages like ASP and ColdFusion.

UltraDev also support updates and downloads of code snippets over the Internet.

Adobe GoLive 5.0

GoLive 5.0 is an HTML editor for professional Web site design. GoLive 5.0 comes with more than 100 new features compared to the previous version. 

GoLive's user interface has much in common with other Adobe products, like Photoshop. If you are familiar with an Adobe product, GoLive is easy to learn and maintain.

GoLive has five work windows: page layout, frames, source code, HTML outline, and a page preview. You can also split the views, and work on source code and layout details at the same time.

GoLive protects handwritten code (like JavaScript and ASP) so it can be imported without destroying the page design. Non recognized HTML code is left alone. 

A built-in QuickTime editor can include Flash files.

GoLive has a limited support for DHTML and ASP.

NetObjects Fusion 5

NetObjects Fusion 5 is an advanced HTML editor for creating professional Web sites. The program is suitable for small and medium-sized companies.

Fusion 5 contains a large set of graphical styles and more than 50 templates to make it easy to create your own Web site that looks professional. It gives you a very exact layout, and the posiblities of tailored Web sites are good.

You do not have to know any HTML to use Fusion. The disadvantage of this is when you are going to publish your Web site. You have no guarantee that your pages will be displayed properly.

All pages created in Fusion must be exported to HTML code. This is a clumsy process.

HomeSite 4.5

HomeSite is Allaire’s award-winning HTML editor. HomeSite features an intuitive WYSIWYN ("what you see is what you need") interface that provides on-screen access to everything you need to build great Web sites.

Homesite has three work windows: An HTML source code window, a design window, and a preview window.

Homesite has several wizard for creating frames, tables, etc., and it includes a program for creating image maps. The program also supports ColdFusion, which enables database connection. 

Homesite 4.5 supports some functions in DHTML, SMIL, CSS, JavaScript, ASP, JSP, Perl, CFML, VBScript, and XML.

HotMetal PRO 6

HotMetal PRO 6 is an HTML editor for professional Web Developers. This program is not very suitable for beginners.

The program has three views: source view, graphical view, and the "Tags On" view.

HotMetal PRO 6 contain several wizards and a clipart gallery. The "Asset Manager" is HotMetal PRO's most important function, it allows you to drag-and-drop graphics, text, and videoclips directly into the page you are designing.

The program also contains a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor.
