Geophysics Majors
This course is a review of the Earth, standard Earth models, heat flow in the Earth, the Earth's magnetic field, plate tectonics, physics of faulting and principles of earthquake seismology, which are then presented in this order: 1) Earthquake/exploration Seismology, 2) Gravity, 3) Plate Tectonics, 4) Geomagnetism, 5) Heat Flow 6) Case studies
Providing students knowledge more about the mathematical and physical aspects of solid Earth geophysics such as the currently accepted physical models used to describe the Earth's interior and evolution. Finally, present course aim to get students to have an appreciation for the ways in which solid Earth scientists make inferences from a variety of physical observations. The detail about the content of course may be given from the syllabus. On other hand, the course requires active involvement of the students through the following components:
PRESENTING: the giving short seminars of weekly selected topics for having a better skill in reflecting the part of geophysics effectively for non-geophysics and through the Earth-Science community.
- Weekly selected papers are questioned by students to raise up their concerns on popular papers. Then, students are required to introduce their possible answers for questions . Also, presenter of week is supposed to review those questions asked by audience.
QUESTIONING:
- Then, students are asked to write about the crustal structure and tectonic evolution of a region, from the point of earth science's perspective through the various types of geophysical data.
WRITING: Preparing a term-project which is base for students to improve the learning skills of searching concepts and synthesizing them in paper format.
EVALUATING: Term-projects under the modified GJI's review form is reviewed by students in providing them an understanding what kind of things through the evaluation of project from the scientific committee through the their reviewing efforts.
Non-Geophysics Majors
The course will prove useful for Civil engineering and Applied Physics students to have skills including problems related to physical cause of natural hazards and geophysical phenomena. Majors outside geology are welcome and encouraged to consider Geop-503 as an elective course. Provided material in the class will cover experience useful to engineering and physics majors interested in finding employment with environmental, engineering, and geotechnical companies.
