    Research Openings Announcement !

    Master's and PhD research projects openings! Funding available for the students.

    The lab is looking for energetic, hardworking and independent individuals to carry out research in the following areas:

     

    Deployment of visible/C-band/L-band semiconductor lasers in optical sensing.

     

    This is in collaboration with King Saud University (KSU) and hence the student will have a       chance to work there and get hands on experience on the state-of the art equipments of "communication and network" research lab, and strengthen his resume to join industry or pursue higher studies.

     

    Application of new class of 1.6 um lasers for optical access network applications.

     

    This is in collaboration with King Saud University (KSU) and hence the student will have a       chance to work there and get hands on experience on the state-of the art equipments of "communication and network" research lab, and strengthen his resume to join industry or pursue higher studies.

     

    Performance improvement of visible/UV semiconductor lasers, exploring novel visible light semiconductor light emitters, for high-speed visible light communications.

     

    This is in collaboration with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and hence the student will have a chance to work there and get hands on experience on the state-of the art equipments of "Photonics Laboratory" and various other research lab.

    paper got accepted in Elsevier "Optics and Laser Technology" journal. This is a review paper consolidating the recent developments (2015-2022) in surface plasmom based refractive index biosenors.

Alamoudi's conference paper got accepted in "Optoelectronics Global Conference (OGC) 2022 (http://www.ipsogc.org/sub.html)", scheduled in Sep 06 - Sep 09 2022, Shenzhen, China. This is the 7th edition of the conference technically sponsored by IEEE. This is the outcome of his undergraduate research course.

    Emad Alkhazraji's paper got accepted in "IEEE Photonics Journal". This work demonstrated 192 Gb/s data capacity 3-channel mid L-band DWDM transmission system using an L-band InAs/InP quantum-dash nanostructure based laser, for the first time.

    Emad Alkhazraji's paper got accepted in "SPIE Optical Engineering Journal". This work studied the multi-mode tunability of InAs/InPQdash two-section laser with integrated amplifier. A  total wavelength tunability of 15.8 nm in the extended-L-band (1615 to 1630.8 nm) window with an estimated gain of 8.5 dB is demonstrated.

This work demonstrates ~8 nm tuning window with ~12 mW usable power in blue color (~450 nm) region using an InGaN/GaN semiconductor laser and medium injection ratio self-injection locking technique in external configuration.

    Former ORL student Md. Hosne Mobarok Shamim has beeen awarded the prestigeous SPIE 2020 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship .  This is merit-based scholarship. Every year around 80 students (SPIE student member only) are being selected to receive this award (this year it is 78). The key criterion in evaluating and ranking applications is the "prospect for the long-term contribution that the granting of an award will make to the field of optics, photonics or related field."

    Emad Alkhazraji's paper got accepted in "IEEE Photonics Journal". This work studied the electro-absorption and electro-optics charactersitics of InAs/InPQdash active region based waveguide. An extinction ratio of 15 dB at -8 V across S-C-L band is demonstrated.

The work proposes and demonstrated a narrow spaced multi-wavelength green laser diode for visible WDM systems and a two-stage self-injection locking technique to get near single mode visible lasers.

This work developed a model for analyzing two-section tunable semiconductor quantum-dash lasers and demonstrates a tunability up to ~50 nm via varying the absorber-section length.

The work compares the characteristics of external and self-injection locking schemes on L-band quantum-dash lasers, and their performance on fiber and free space optical communication.

     

    Emad Alkhazraji attended the 17th Asian Communication and Photonics Conference ACP 2017  (http://www.acpconf.org/), which is one of the renowned conference in the area of Photonics, and presented three papers of the lab. The conference was recently (10 Nov - 13 Nov) concluded.

     

    Emad Alkhazraji attended the 30th International Conference IPC 2017 (IEEE Photonics Conference) (https://www.photonicssociety.org/conferences/ieee-photonics-conference), which is one of the renowned conference in the area of Photonics, and presented two papers of the lab. The conference was recently (1st Oct - 5th Oct) concluded.

     

    Three conference papers of the lab has been accepted in the 17th Asia Communication and Photonics Conference (ACP) 2017  (http://www.acpconf.org/) which is the largest international conference on Photonics in Asia-pacific region, and held annually since 2001. The conference is scheduled on 10 - 13 Nov 2017

     

    Mohamed A. Shemis attended the prestigious conference on laser and electro-optics pacific region (CLEO-PR) 2017 (http://photonics2017.org/index.php), to present two papers of the lab. The conference was recently (31 July - 4 Aug 2017) concluded.

     

    Muhammad Talal secured SPIE Student Travel Grant 2017

    On behalf of SPIE and the Symposium and Conference Chairs of Defense + Commercial Sensing (DCS)2017, Muhammad was awarded an SPIE Student Travel Grant in the amount of $600 USD to present my paper # 10188-20 at Anaheim, California, USA. This assisted him to travel and present his research at one of the biggest and prestigious SPIE platform.

                 SPIE is an international society for optics and photonics. The Society offers a small number of supplemental travel grants to eligible and selected full time student authors who plan to present their accepted papers at SPIE conferences and meeting. Each grant is intended to partially reimburse travel expenses (airfare, ground transportation, and/or hotel). Grants typically range from $300-$750 USD per international traveler. Moreover, applicants are judged on financial need and merit.
