In this course, the lab work was emphasized. Students were encouraged to execute simple instrumentation projects to illustate the application of various sensors in real life. The lab grade was divided into student preparation during the lab sessions, the weekly lab report, and an oral examination. The course material was enriched by video tapes from ISA The International Society for Measurement and Control. These professional training video tapes are very well respected in the process industry. The instructor organized a field trip to the Calibration and Standard Laboratory of the Research Institute. Another trip is usually scheduled for a petrochemical factory. Students complaints from the text book and the lack of solved examples in the book. Several problem sessions were organized to help students in solving the homeworks and for the preparation of the midterms and the final.
I also introduced small application projects. Each project was executed by 3-4 students. These projects enhanced their team work attitude and developed their innovation and creativity skills. Students demonstrated their ability to execute small design projects from verbal description to design and testing. Students built 5 working projects :
1- Electronic Scale using strain gauges.
2- A device for measuring breath pressure.
3- Digital level meter using Potentiometers.
4- Digital level meter based on the liquid conductivity.
5- Temperature probe using IC temperatuture sensor.
