Example 1

2-4 Interference

Two sound waves from two different sources with the same frequency, 350 Hz, travel at a speed of 330 m/s. The sources are in phase. What is the phase difference of the waves at a point that is 6.50 m from one source and 5.00 m from other? The waves are traveling in the same direction.

The phase difference is rad.

Answer

The phase difference Dfis related to the path length difference DL through the relationship

Since f = 350 Hz and v = 330 m/s,
