The linear mass density of a string m is the mass per unit length of the string.

 

The linear mass density of a string is an intrinsic property of the string; it does not depend on the length of the string.  For example, if you cut a 4-m string into two strings one with a length of 1 m and the other of a length of 3 m, both strings, the short and the long one, have the same linear mass density.
