Syed Sohail Akhtar, Phd

Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, KFUPM

I currently hold the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia. In 2011, I joined KFUPM as an Assistant Professor, where I have been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 2016. My research areas are applied materials, manufacturing and computational mechanics. I have authored/co-authored more than 85 archival technical publications, including 75 ISI journal papers. I have published 02 books and many book chapters. I hold 03 patent applications dealing with laser- assisted surface modification methodologies for different alloys. Overall, my research consists of a good mix of futuristic and present-day research that is of practical significance and has immediate relevance and impact in industry. In collaboration with other research fellows, I have worked on 19 basic and applied research projects; some of them were internally funded by the KFUPM, while others were funded by agencies like King Abdul-Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), The National Science, Technology and Innovation Plan (NSTIP) and Saudi Arabian Basic Industries (SABIC). I also served as Co-PI in a KFUPM/MIT collaborative research project. I have been awarded “Excellence in Research” Award 2016 by the College of Engineering, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in recognition to my research achievements. I am actively involved in editorial review process of several international Journals and conference proceedings. I also have reviewed many project proposals for funding bodies. I am a regular reviewer of 19 leading International Journals in the area of applied mechanics, materials and manufacturing. My teaching is greatly influenced by my extensive research work and five years of professional job in well-established industrial and R & D organizations. I have taught a number of Mechanical Engineering graduate and undergraduate courses including materials science, machine design, manufacturing processes, reliability engineering, probabilistic concepts in design & production, non-linear finite element analysis and design & analysis of engineering experiments.
