Case Study - 8: Blistering in a Down-hole Tubing |
Type of Failure | A down hole tubing of steel coated with epoxy showing blistering in producing wells |
Material | Stainless Steel 316 |
Environment | Oil field environment, formation well
|
|
|
Observation |
Epoxy coat failure by blistering |
Reasons |
Pigments in epoxy binder absorb water forming bubbles on the substrate. The bubbles burst and expose the steel substrate.
|
Remedy |
The surface needs to be re coated. Use pigments which are water
repellent. |
