Math 599: Seminar (1-0-0)
MS students are required to attend Departmental seminars delivered by faculty, visiting scholars and graduate students. Additionally, each MS student should present a 20 minutes seminar on a timely research topic. The course is graded as pass or fail.
Math 699: Seminar (1-0-0)
PhD students are required to attend Departmental seminars delivered by faculty, visiting scholars and graduate students. Additionally, each PhD student should present at least one seminar on a timely research topic. PhD students should pass the comprehensive examination as part of this course. The course is graded as pass or fail.
Note: Math 699 is a co-requisite for Math 711 (Pre-Dissertation).
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to:
Apply effective strategies in literature searches
Cite sources properly
Conduct a 25 minutes mathematics talk
Requirements
The student is expected to fulfill the following requirements.
Attendance of 9 seminars as follows: 3 visiting scholars, 3 dept faculty, 3 graduate students. A record of attendance will be maintained.
Weekly or bi-weekly meetings with the seminar advisor.
Seminar. (The student is expected to improve his writing and presentation skills by consulting the resources provided below).
Calendar
Week 2 The student submits to the coordinator the name of the seminar advisor.
Week 6 The student submits to the coordinator the Midterm Report.
Midterm warnings will be issued accordingly.
Week 11 The student submits to the coordinator the seminar title and abstract.
Week 13 The seminar is announced by the department.
Week 14-15 The seminar is conducted.
Week 15 The final report is submitted by the seminar advisor.
