The <meta> tag

Definition and Usage

The <meta> element provides meta-information about your page, such as descriptions and keywords for search engines.


Tips and Notes

Note: The <meta> tag always goes inside the head element.

Note: The end tag is forbidden.


Examples

This meta element defines keywords for search engines:
<meta name="keywords" content="HTML, DHTML, CSS, XML, XHTML, JavaScript, VBScript">

This meta element defines a description of your page:
<meta name="description" content="Free Web tutorials on HTML, CSS, XML, and XHTML">

This meta element defines the last revision of your page:
<meta name="revised" content="YourName, 6/10/99">
