• Catalog Description:
  The purpose of this course is to help improve students` ability for presenting their technical work. It also teaches students about the nature of engineering as a profession, codes of professional conducts, ethics and responsibility, and the role of engineering societies and organizations world-wide. Case studies of conflict between engineering professional ethical values and external demands. The course features students` participation in discussion held by COE faculty members and invited guests. Each student is required to deliver a short talk toward the end of the semester.
  Prerequisite: Junior Standing.
• Goals:
  • To teach students the nature of engineering as a profession.
  • To teach students the ethical and professional responsibility of engineering in the society.
  • To improve students` technical and professional communication skills.
  • To introduce students to different professional societies and organizations world-wide.
• Course Policy:
  Students attendance and participation in class: 30/100

  Attendance of two departmental seminars: 10/100

  Attendance of two senior project presentations: 10/100

  Evaluation of short talk delivered by the student: 50/100

• Article Selection:
  Each student has to submit a set of three articles from which an article will be selected for the student. The student will present the selected article in the class in 10 minutes. Articles should be selected covering subjects related to the computer engineering filed and should be recent. The article selected should be at least 4 pages. The recommended journals for article selection are:
  • IEEE Spectrum
  • IEEE Computer Magazine
  • Communications of the ACM
  • IEEE Network Magazine
  • Scientific America Magazine

  Students should consult with the course instructor for the selection of the article for their presentation. Subject to the approval of the course instructor, it is possible to select an article from a magazine other than those mentioned above. The deadline for selecting and submitting articles from magazines is Saturday, March 15, 2003.

• List of Selected Articles:
  The list of selected articles and their presentation times will be determined and posted on Saturday, March 22, 2003.
• Presentations:
  Each student will be scheduled to give a formal presentation. The presentation will be evaluated by the course instructor. Students will also evaluate the presentations of their peers. All presentations will be made during the regular class meetings. Presentations are recommended to be made using PowerPoint. A notebook and Infocus machine will be available for animated presentations.
