Guidelines for Coop Students

 

Coop Objectives:

1-                Training and hand-on experience for students before graduation.

2-                Enhancing group work, communication skills, and job-related skills.

3-                Exposing students to the industry and business in the region.

4-                Chance of the local industry to get familiar with our students and their quality of education.

5-                Bridging the gap between engineering science and industry.

Employer Role:

Company has an important role to play in promoting the success of the training program. And to achieve this goal, below are some of the important elements that are expected to be provided by the company:

·        Provide every student with a training program reflecting his training assignment during the 28 weeks. The program needs to be related to student’s academic field of study.

·        The COOP student should be treated like any other employee. If he does not show up to work either on time or at all, the University should be notified so that corrective action can be taken. Absence should be reflected in the evaluation report.

·        If the COOP student does not perform well or his performance does not meet the company’s standard, the University should be notified immediately so that corrective action can be taken.

·        The COOP student should be assigned to a professional in his field, filed mentor, who will be responsible for making the student’s training meaningful and effective.

·        Students should be encouraged and allowed to prepare technical reports and conduct oral presentations during the training period.

·        Visits by COOP Advisors fro the University are allowed.

 

Filed Mentor:

 

The field mentor is practicing engineer assigned by the training organization. The role of field mentor is of prime importance in ensuring adequate professional development of an assigned KFUPM student.  It is expected that the mentor will set a working plan  for the student that cover the coop assignment period, 28 weeks. The mentor will be mainly in charge of the following tasks:

 

a)    Guide the student to prepare the working plan and forward it to the coop coordinator before within the first four-weeks of the training period.

 

b)    Ensure that the progress reports provided by student are prepared under the guidance of the mentor.

 

c)     Complete the student training evaluation form, appendix A, at the end of week 8 and week 28 of the coop training period.

 

Useful Hints For Coop Students:

During the Coop, student should:

1.     Make sure that he is provided with a coop training schedule. This schedule should detail the activities performed in the assigned department(s) or divisions(s) and the time periods.

 

2.     Make sure that his training schedule is related to his academic major and avoid non-related jobs.

 

 

IMPORTANT: THE TRAINING SCHEDULE SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO THE COOP COORDINATOR AND ADVISOR NOT LATER THAN 1ST WEEK OF TRAINING PERIOD.

 

1.     Keep a record of the daily activities, such as specific jobs performed, field trips made, meetings attended, seminars attended, etc.

 

2.     Maintain regular contact with his coop advisor, up-date him on hob assignments, experiences, and discuss with him topics for the coop report.

 

Upon return to KFUPM, student should:

 

1.     Contact his advisor immediately to determine a schedule for completing your final report within the specified deadline.

 

2.     Complete his report and prepare himself for the presentation.
