UTILIZATION OF
"HADEED" SLAG IN PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION IN

ABSTRACT
The
Saudi Iron and Steel Company (HADEED) in Jubail is
producing iron and steel from raw materials. Slag produced as a by- product
represents about 10 to 15% of the steel. By the end of 1987, the amount of slag
will be more than 130,000 ton/year. This study investigates the applicability
of utilization of this waste product in pavement construction to replace low
quality aggregates that are mostly available In the
Mix
design optimization results proved the success of using HADEED slag as coarse
aggregates to produce good quality asphalt mixes. Slag mixes showed
significantly better stability, water damage resistance, split tensile strength
and modulus of resilience than those made with natural crushed aggregates.
Findings
are implemented in design charts which indicated a 20-35% saving in pavement
thickness by using slag mixes.
