Introduction
The Environmental Impact Assessment: Preliminary Index of Useful Internet Web Sites is a compilation of Internet Web sites that are related to environmental assessment. In this day and age of information, it is often difficult to know where to turn to find the necessary information. The aim of this index is to serve as a preliminary guide to information that may prove helpful in dealing with environmental impact assessment (EIA).
With the multitude of sites available on the Internet, we have attempted to be very selective in choosing sites for this index to provide a cross section of available materials. Included in this index is a short summary of information that will be found on each site. The links included in the index have each been tested, but due to the nature of the Internet, the perfect functioning of each site cannot be guaranteed.
Inclusion of commercial entities in this index does not represent an endorsement by the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA). Users of the index will need to determine the usefulness of the sites mentioned.
This index has been prepared by Tamara Herman, Fiona Barker, Hilary Clark and Peter Croal for the Environmental Assessment and Compliance Unit of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). We express our thanks to Rita Hamm, Chief Executive Officer of IAIA for her support to put the index on IAIA's homepage to best benefit the EIA community.
If you are aware of other EIA sites that should be included in this list, or if you discover an error that needs to be corrected, please contact Peter Croal at:

The GETS project is an European research project on the application of
Geomorphology and Environmental impact assessment to Transportation Systems.
The project started in 1998 and ended November 2001. The project was funded by
the Training and Mobility of Researchers Program. Four case studies in
different European settings resulted in spatial databases on which advanced
simulations and prediction models are applied, concerning among others floods,
landslides and avalanches. Both the databases and the methods have to be
communicated and made widely available to European researchers and local
administrations involved in environmental management. The GETS website contains
an extensive presentation of research results and access to metadata and
resources, including a web mapping section.
The Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM)
http://idpm.man.ac.uk/sia-trade
The Institute for
Development Policy and Management (IDPM) at the
University of Manchester has been Commissioned by the European Commission
to continue work on the impact trade negotiation may have on sustainable
development. Phase I and II of this research has been
completed. These
phases resulted in the development of a methodology for carrying out a
sustainable impact assessment. This methodology was then used to make a
broad qualitative assessment of the sustainability impact of the New Round
of trade negotiations. The current study is refining this methodology and
engaging in broad consultations and knowledge network formation.
Analytical Strategic Environmental Assessment (ANSEA)
The Analytical Strategic Environmental Assessment (ANSEA) is an effort to define a logically founded methodology for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of policies, plans and programmes (PPP). In charge of the project is a consortium of eight institutions covering seven European countries.
The ANSEA project is a research project financed under the 5th Framework Research Programme of the European Union. The ANSEA project aims to provide an enhanced theoretical and methodological background for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and to provide a framework for assisting in the implementation of European and national directives and procedural requirements in this area.
The overall objective of the ANSEA project is to develop an approach and framework for SEA that ensures a sound integration of the environment into decision-making processes at the strategic level, i.e. in the formulation of policies, plans and programmes. To achieve this, the project has three main objectives. The first objective is to develop a sound theoretical basis for SEA as a discussion platform for the ANSEA framework. A book will be produced on the theoretical concepts and framework for an Analytical Strategic Environmental Assessment methodology.
Dissemination activities are to be carried out to reach the both the scientific audience and the main users in public administrations. In addition to publishing the reports mentioned, a public symposium on the results will be organized, and a web page on ANSEA is set up.
The site offers a number of case studies highlighting the work of ANSEA. The first study deals with regional waste managing, with the aim of adapting the regional regulation to the European and national ones. The plan is meant to: reduce waste and hazardous waste production, reduce the use of damps as final waste disposal, improve waste material recycling, minimise environmental impacts. Within the plan a methodology has been developed to assess plan alternatives through a set of environmental and socio-economic indicators.
The site also offers a wide variety of links, numerous publications, a complete glossary of all the important terms, project phases, meeting schedules and important hypotheses in the field of SEA.
Environmental Assessment in Countries in Transition
http://www.personal.ceu.hu/departs/envsci/eianetwork

The Environmental Assessment in Countries in Transition Web Site keeps track of this highly fluid environment and is an excellent information resource for anyone interested in these countries.
The site offers a Network for Environmental Assessment in CITs open to all who are interested in developing EIA systems in CITs, want to share their knowledge, and want to learn from the experiences of others. A large list of contacts from all involved countries and groups is provided, along with an enormous bank of national legislation, including links to international laws and conventions and EA in development banks and international aid agencies.
