Capstone Project Spring 2015   "Efficient Light Extraction from LEDs"

Ali Alhadidi, Abdulrahman Aldakhil, Ateeq Alzahrani and Hasan Altaweel

This project studies potential ways of increasing the light extraction efficiency of LEDs. It looks at three methods. Firstly, single layer coating is discussed and theoretically analyzed. Secondly, random scattering of zinc oxide nano-particles on the LED’s surface is studied. Thirdly, the effect of random deposition of gold coated zinc oxide nano-particles on an LED’s surface is studied. more

summer research internship at KAUST Photonics lab.

The scope of work includes theoretical modeling,

fabrication and characterization of LED quantum structures.

Capstone Project Spring 2014   "Enhanced Florescence Light-emitters"

Emad Alkhazraji, Mohamed Shemis, Mohammad Abalkhail and Mohammad Najmi

The aim of this senior capstone project is to study ZnO-based structure as an emission enhancing material. In particular, two structures are studied, ZnO nanoparticles and ZnO nano-films. The work is based on synthesizing, fabrication and measurements. Emission enhancement is characterized by Photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Results show that ZnO-plasmonics can play an important role in emission enhancement. In particular, it was found that coating ZnO nanoparticles with metals enhances the ultra violet emission by about 11 to 20 %, depending on the type of metal. Furthermore, ZnO thin film and metals’ plasmonics have enhanced the emission at some specific thicknesses when it was coupled with InGaN/GaN quantum well LEDs. more
