Question: In a CD manufacturing process, CD packing is the last operation.  CD packing operation consists of 4 elements.  To establish a time standard for the packing operation, the company has conducted a time study for this operation, with a sample of 4 observations, and come up with the observed times (in seconds) and rating as shown in the table below. If the allowance is 9%, calculate the standard time for the CD packing operation.

Question: Riyadh Furniture Co. has received an order from KFUPM of 500 Dhahran lounge seats.

The Dhahran seats are assembled of steel shells and plastic laminated tables supported on tubular base frame. Seat pads are manufactured from foam covered in fabric. The pad assembly is considered to be the bottleneck operation, taking the longest time to assemble among all operations in the seat production. The standard time to assemble the four pads on one seat is 12 minutes. The company works on a 7-hour shift, with no overtime. The production operation operates only 5 days in a week.

  1. How many days are required to fulfill the order?
  2. How many workers need to be hired to fulfill the order only in 4 days?

    KFUPM has negotiated an agreement with the company to impose a fine (penalty) for late delivery. Each day in excess of 4 days is going to incur the company a penalty of 200 riyals. Temporary workers are hired for one month, with a monthly wage of 1,200 riyals.

  3. What is the number of workers need to be hired that will minimize the sum of the wages and the fine that might be incurred?
