ISE 325 Engineering Statistics

Catalog Description Review and extension of estimation and test of hypothesis and their application in industrial engineering. Introduction to planned industrial experiments including analysis of variance, regression and design of experiments. Taguchi arrays and their application in quality control.

Course objectives The course aims to give students the statistical tools that allow for better designs in the area of industrial engineering, such as selection of best machine parameters, production line setups, product characteristics, service levels, etc.

Computer usage We will use two software packages in this course. Every one is familiar with MS Excel, therefore it will be used for most statistics analysis computations. MINITAB is a more specialized package, hence, it is more powerful.  We will use the functions in MINITAB that are not available in Excel.  Tutorials on Excel and MINITAB will be uploaded to Blackboard.  These tutorials are easy to follow, and we will sometimes illustrate the use of the statistical tools in class.  There will be a computer test at the end of the semester, the students will be tested on the use of statistical tools in Excel and MINITAB.

Blackboard Blackboard is an essential part of the course.  Every one is asked to activate his account and log into the course regularly. As a matter of rule, consider the course to be paperless; homework assignments, deadlines, solutions, etc, will be posted and not distributed.

Attendance Attending the class is mandatory, as stated by KFUPM regulations. Because of the large size of the class and the limited time, attendance will be taken at random times, but no less than three times a week.  Therefore, excuses will not be accepted.  A DN grade will be reported without prior warning.

Quiz policy Two quizzes will be given in the course. No makeup will be given for any reason.

Extra credit study This study is intended to support creative ideas and innovative applications of the course material in industrial settings. Because of its nature, what is expected and delivered in the study cannot be stated precisely, my judgment only will determine the score that will be given to the study. The extra credit study is open to groups and individuals. It is advised that the idea of the study is presented to me before the actual work begins. The deadline for the submission is August 31st, 2009.
