QUALITY OF RESEARCH

1.      Importance:

I have been involved in the scientific research work on the development of catalysts that are used in refining and petrochemicals processes in Saudi Arabia and rest of the world. All seven refineries owned by Saudi Aramco and the SABIC affiliated industries in Jubail and Yanbu utilize these expensive catalysts worth of millions of dollars. There is also strategic need to develop home-grown catalyst systems for these industries. These catalysts systems are proprietary and are licensed by international renowned catalysts manufacturing companies. Every year, Saudi Arabia pays millions of dollars to these catalyst companies as a licensing fee. Such catalysts systems, once developed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can save these dollars as well as the refining and petrochemicals processes and industries can be strategically protected.

2.      Technical Quality

The quality of research is very clearly depicted by the results obtained during the execution of the projects. The technical quality is also exhibited by my publications in refereed Journal, and acceptance of my papers in national and international conferences.

3.      Creativity

The creativity of the research can be assessed by the fact that we have achieved a number of patents based on novel ideas. These patents have been awarded based on the fact that the idea is very new and contains creativity, novelty, non-obviousness which are the criteria for awarding the patent. In one of the on-going project, a catalyst based on a new idea has been developed for transalkylation.  This catalyst has been evaluated in our laboratories and has proved better than the best catalyst developed earlier by Nippon Oil Research Institute, in Japan. A patent is being filed for this catalyst.

4.      Originality

The originality of the research can be assessed by the fact that we have achieved a number of patents. These patents are awarded based on novelty, non-obviousness which are the criteria for awarding the patent. In one of the recent project which is in progress, a novel catalyst for transalkylation has been developed which has been proved better than the best catalyst developed earlier by Nippon Oil Research Institute, in Japan.

5.      Applicability

The results during the LAO project were further developed by the SABIC and now SABIC owns ands license a process for the production of alpha olefins through oligomerization of ethylene. Other examples include the development of hydrocracking catalysts in the Saudi-Japanese joint research Program.

6.      Versatility/Diversity

The projects and the research conducted has a diversification. These include areas including catalyst development, evaluation and screening of catalysts, evaluation of petroleum and petrochemical products, oxygenates in gasoline, and environmental hazards of the automotive pollution and how to control it. This versatlity and diversification is also shown by the publications in Journal, in national and international conference proceedings and in the conference and symposia presentations.  

7.      Complexity of the Problem

During the execution of the research projects, complex type of problems were faced. The problems were effectively handled and the solution were achieved through hardworking and creativity. These complex problem occurred during the catalyst evaluation, analysis and large data evaluation for reactions and the analysis. The problems though complex, were handled with coherent team work and the results were submitted within the committed time frame. One of the project conducted for SABIC in the area of VCM migration from PVC pipes to water posed a challenging task for the project team. The challenge were manifold that included to design a leak-proof system for migration of VCM from pipes to water under different temperature and durations, to hold the volatile and toxic VCM gas in water at different temperature and for different durations, to transfer the water containing ppb level of volatile VCM gas to the gas chromatograph and to analyze the water containing ppb level of volatile VCM gas accurately. The project was successfully conducted and the reports were delivered to the client within the committed project schedule. The clinet appreciated the work and efforts of the project team and the Center management for the project accomplished.
