AIMS

 The objective of this course is to further develop students’ use of academic English so that they are fully prepared to begin entry-level university courses. By reinforcement and extension of skills acquired in Module 03, coupled with further review of test-taking skills, it is expected that students will have sufficiently progressed so as to achieve a score of 500 on the TOEFL-IPT at the end of the course.

  

TOEFL

 To be able to achieve a 500 on the TOEFL-ITP.

  

SPEAKING

 To continue to develop students’ oral proficiencies and ability to speak on academic topics.

  

READING/VOCABULARY 

            To show mastery of the vocabulary and comprehension of the passages in Reading Explorer 3.

 

 WRITING

 

1.    To be able to successfully write a 4-5 paragraph, two-sided argumentative (for and against) composition of approximately 300 words.

2.    To be able to successfully write a 4-5 paragraph composition of approximately 300 words which analyzes the causes/effects of a particular issue.

3.    To be able to successfully write a 4-5 paragraph composition of approximately 300 words which analyzes the problems caused by, or associated with, a particular issue and suggests possible solutions.

 ** Prompts, model compositions and grading rubrics will be sent to you via email.**

 

Course Components and Assessments

 TOEFL Diagnostic and Practice Tests (Recommended Procedures)

1.   TOEFL practice tests should be given under test conditions. Please have students use the bubble sheets in the TOEFL Red Book or photocopies of actual OMRs.

2.   Walk the students through the diagnostic process and make note of their scores. Students should also make note of the areas in which they must improve.

 

Writing Tests (15%)

1.   On the Writing Tests students will have one prompt that they must respond to in 50 minutes.

2.   ALL COMPOSITIONS SHOULD BE AROUND 300 WORDS IN LENGTH.

3.   Writing Tests should be graded and submitted for moderation to The Coordinator on the following Sunday afternoon. When requested, teachers should submit a photocopy of 3 compositions.  You should submit the highest, the lowest and a paper that has received an average grade for your section.

4.   Papers should not be returned to students or entered into OSIS until notice is given by The Coordinator. This is usually done by midday Tuesday.

   

Progress Tests (10%)

1. The first Progress Test will be 50 minutes long and cover vocabulary and readings from Nat. Geo. Units 1-6. There will also be a TOEFL-style listening component based on Listening sections A and B.

2. The second Progress test will be 50 minutes long and cover Nat. Geo. Units 7-12 and another TOEFL-style listening based on sections B and C.

3. PROGRESS TESTS SHOULD NOT  BE RETURNED TO STUDENTS OR DISCUSSED IN CLASS!!

Effort (5%)

The effort mark is at the discretion of the teacher but should be used to help students’ reach their full potential.

Speaking (5%

Speaking Tests will be presentations based on two of the writing genres (i.e., argument, causes/effects or problems/solutions). Topics can come from the same selection of prompts as the writing tests or topics derived from the Nat. Geo. readings. A more detailed explanation will be provided via email.

 

    Final Exams (65%)

1.           TOEFL = 30%

2.           The Use of English (15%) final will cover vocabulary and readings from units 1-12 of Reading Explorer and a TOEFL-style listening. Students have 100 minutes for this exam.

3.                   The Writing Final (20%) will test two of the three writing genres taught. Students will have 100 minutes to respond to both.

*Progress Tests take place from 9-9:50 (early shift) and 10-10:50 (late shift).

*Writing Tests are 50 minutes in duration and take place from 14:10-15:00 (early shift) and 16:20-17:10 (late shift).

*Speaking Tests take place during the afternoon shifts.

*TOEFL Practice tests take place during the morning shifts.

PROMOTION BY TOEFL SYSTEM


All ENGL04 students will take TOEFL.

 

Calculation: =IF(score>499,30,(IF(score>449,3/5*score-270,0)))


Promotion:


1. A student who passes the ENGL04 course and scores 500+ on TOEFL is promoted to the undergraduate program.

2. A student who passes the ENGL04 course but scores less than 500 on TOEFL will proceed to ENGLEP (2 hours per day) in the next quarter.
