Subtracting Vectors, A Tutorial

To find the difference A - B:

  • Put the vectors tail-to-tail.
  • Connect the tip of the vector with the negative sign (in this case B) to the other tip.
    Starting at the tail of C, you can reach its tip indirectly first by going against B then by going along A.
    Alternatively,
  • Put the vectors tip-to-tip.
  • Connect the tail of the vector with the positive sign (in this case A) to the other tail.
    Starting at the tail of C, you can reach its tip indirectly first by going along A then by going against B.
