1.     Course description: 

The course material includes the following topics:  Concepts of Modern Physics:  photons, electronic structure of  isolated atoms; Atoms and bonding, crystal structures;  energy bands  in solids, insulators, semiconductors and conductors; electrons and holes in semiconductors, drift and diffusion, mobility, recombination and lifetime, conductivity;  PN junctions, I(V) characteristics, Fabrication Technology, applications; Bipolar transistor, Field Effect Transistors;  Optoelectronics:   Lasers, photodetectors, Light Emitting diodes, Solar-cells.

 

2.     Prerequisite: PHYS 102

 

3.     Textbook:  Kanaan Kano: "Semiconductor Devices", Prentice Hall, 1998
