Transverse or longitudinal waves are not the only types of mechanical waves. For example, in waves on a surface of a liquid, the motion of the particles can have transverse and longitudinal components. In phys 102, we will not discuss
these types of waves.
In a longitudinal wave, the particles of the medium move parallel to the direction of the wave motion. Sound waves in air are longitudinal waves.
