Case Study - 8: Blistering in a Down-hole Tubing

Type of Failure A down hole tubing of steel coated with epoxy showing blistering in producing wells
Material Stainless Steel 316
Environment Oil field environment, formation well

Observation

Epoxy coat failure by blistering

Reasons

Pigments in epoxy binder absorb water forming bubbles on the substrate. The bubbles burst and expose the steel substrate.

Remedy

The surface needs to be re coated. Use pigments which are water repellent.
