7. Coating Failures

7.4 Types of Failures

4. Adhesion Related Failures

(B) Flaking

Identification:

The paint system detaches due to the lack of adhesion to the substrate on underlying layer.

Description:

  • The coating on becoming hard and brittle pulls away from the substrate. It generally occurs after painting on substrates with high moisture content or on exposure of the coating to extreme heat and ultra violet radiation. Flaking can also be caused by painting over a chalked surface.

Prevention:

  • Do not paint on chalky or powdery substrate

  • Protect the coating from extreme heat
