 More Than Twenty Five Years of R&D in Quest For Sustainable Development Based On Knowledge Economy




Dr. Al-Ghamdi has more than twenty five years of experience in the field of environmental protection and Management and almost ten years of teaching sustainability and societal responsibility. In addition he is well grounded in business and administration. He is a cofounder and ex-board member of the Saudi Society for Technology Development and Transfer (SSTDT). Also, he is the founder and adviser of the environment and sustainable development club (Earthana أرضنا)
 


Dr. Al-Ghamdi is a faculty member at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. He is teaching sustainability in the Geoscience Department and in the Environmental Sciences master program.

He received a Ph. D. degree in 1998 from the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, University of Manchester, England.  The title of his Ph.D. thesis was Clams as Biomonitors of Oil-related Metal Pollution in Seawater.  He received his BS degree in 1987 from the College of Marine Sciences, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Since 2009 the main interest of DR. Ali Al D. Al-Ghamdi is focused on environmental sustainability and societal responsibility. 

The professional interests of Dr. Al-Ghamdi in the field of environmental protection and management are related mostly to biomonitoring and ecotoxicology. He is interested in establishing certifying schemes for the approval of oil spill treatment products in the marine environment. These schemes require development of regional toxicity protocols. He has proposed an initiative in this regard to further develop this practice area in the Gulf region.

Furthermore, he is interested in environmental assessments, e.g., SEA, EIA, hazardous materials (HazMat) risk assessment. 

Dr. Al-ghamdi has a teaching experience for several years; he initiated and taught undergraduate course (GEOL 303) entitled “Sustaining the Earth” and he also developed a new postgraduate course (ENVS 549) entitled “Environmental sustainability” in the Environmental Sciences Master Program where he taught other courses.

He also has instructed short courses such as “Environment and sustainable development”, and the preparation course for university admission.

DR. Ali Al D. Al-Ghamdi has published a number of scientific and conference papers. He is a member of professional societies and organizations, including the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in the US (SETAC), the Environmental Technology and Management Association (ETMA), and the Saudi Arabian Quality Council-West Region (SQC-WR).

DR. Ali Al D. Al-Ghamdi received offers to assume the following positions:

  • Director of the Innovation Center in KFUPM (the proponent is the Vice Rector).


  • Dean of the Technical College in Al-Baha (the proponent is the Vice Governor of the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation).

  • Assignment of establishing a technical college in Hafr Albatin and assuming a Deanship there (the proponent is the Vice Governor of the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation).


  • Vice Dean to the Society College in Hafr Albatin (the proponent is the Dean of  the Society College/KFUPM in Hafr Albatin

His expertise includes the following:

  • Development of Certifying Schemes to approve the use of chemical and biological products including the Toxicity Measurement Protocols.

  • Strategic Planning and Management for Aquatic Monitoring and Biomonitoring Programs.

  • Aquatic Ecotoxicology.
  • Environmental Impact Assessment.
  • Aquatic biomonitoring.
  • Project Management.
  • Environmental Management systems

DR. Ali Al D. Al-Ghamdi has teaching experience for several years; he initiated and taught undergraduate course (GEOL 330) entitled “Sustaining the Earth” and he also developed a new postgraduate course (ENVS 590) entitled “Environmental sustainability” in the Environmental Sciences Master Program where he taught other courses.

He also has instructed short courses such as “Environment and sustainable development”, and the preparation course for university admission.

He is a reviewer for the Environment and Ecology Research journal and the Arabian Journal of Geosciences and several universities including KFUPM and KAU Funded Research proposal Committee.

DR. Ali Al D. Al-Ghamdi has experience in the field of business and administration including the following:

  • Consultant for SUMOU Holding Company.

  • Member in an advisory committee to the Rector of KFUPM to improve the profile of the university (2007).

  • Board member of the Saudi Society of Technology Development and Transfer (SSTDT) (2006-2009).

  • Executive Director of SSTDT (2003-2006).

  • General coordinator for the foundation of SSTDT.

  • Team leader for solving the two billion financial crises concerning the investment company of Al-Eed and his partner A. AlGhamdi investing company.

  • Chairman/member of several committees in KFUPM.

  • Organizing several conferences and exhibitions in KFUPM and SSTDT.

  • Participating in the Saudi Quality Council’s (SQC-WR) administrative activities.

  • President of the Saudi Club, Manchester, UK (1996)

  • Board member of the Saudi Students Clubs in UK & Ireland (1996)

  • Project management and TQM training.

  • Representative of Modern Industries Company (MIC) (1988).

  • Vice President of Student Services in King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah (1985-1987)
