Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company was established in December 1979 as a joint venture between GCC member states for the manufacture of fertilisers and petrochemicals. The joint venture is equally owned by the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, and Petrochemical Industries Company, Kuwait.

GPIC uses natural gas which is readily available in Bahrain as a feedstock for the production of 1,200 tonnes daily of Ammonia (400,000 tonnes per annum), 1,700 tonnes daily of Urea (600,000 tonnes per annum) and 1,200 tonnes of Methanol (400,000 tonnes per annum). In addition to the production plants the GPIC Complex, which was built in Sitra on a reclaimed area of 60 hectares, comprises utilities plants, maintenance workshops, offices, stores and laboratories. The company employs 474 people of whom 80% are Bahrainis.

The company has a Board of Directors comprising representatives of the three shareholding states. The Board of Directors is chaired by HE Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Advisor to His Highness the Prime Minister for Industrial and Oil Affairs and GPIC Chairman. The company's executive management is led by Mr. AbdulRahman Jawahery, General Manager.

GPIC's achievements are numerous and the company is proud to have won many significant awards. At local level, GPIC has won HH the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Industry in the Major Companies Category in 2001. At regional level, GPIC won the HH Shaikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoom Award for Arab Management for outstanding Arab enterprises in 2002 and at international level, the company was proud to win the Chemical Safety Trophy from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), UK in 2003.

In 2005, GPIC won the prestigious Sir George Earle Trophy from RoSPA, which is awarded for the Highest Performance of the Occupational Safety and Health

Worldwide. It is notable that GPIC has become the first organization outside the Europe and North America to be awarded with this prestigious Trophy. In the final round of this award, GPIC competed with international giants such as Shell, Toyota and General Electric.

GPIC's achievements covered other areas of production, safety, environment and marketing. The company's Urea plant has achieved an international record for continuous production of 941 days without interruption in 2002.

The company's management systems are certified to ISO-9001:2000 quality standard, ISO-14001 environmental standard and the Occupational Health and Safety Management System's OHSAS-18001 standard.

GPIC is considered a role model in the protection of the environment as it is the first industrial company to use practical demonstration projects to verify the eco-friendliness of its operations. A fish farm, bird sanctuary and palm tree plantations have already been established in this regard at the GPIC site. The company achieved another first in the Kingdom of Bahrain with the introduction of environmental research grants to secondary schools. Other related activities include environmental awareness lectures delivered to students by company personnel in Bahrain's primary and intermediate schools.

The company is a significant contributor to the national economy of Bahrain. Established with a paid up capital of BD 60 million (US$ 159 million), GPIC's cumulative profits have exceeded of BD 303 million (US$803 million) and the cumulative dividend payments to the shareholders totaled BD 247 million (US$654 million). The company's activities, represented by natural gas purchases, employment and training of Bahraini nationals, utilisation of local contractors, power consumption and other financial and commercial operations have injected around BD38 million (US$100 million) annually into the national economy.

GPIC is undoubtedly a world class company and is considered as an ideal example of Gulf State cooperation. The company's success would not have been possible without the support and guidance of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister and His Highness Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force. Equally important are the wise directives of the Board of Directors led by the Minister of Oil, His Excellency Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa.

However, it is the diligence, dedication and teamwork of both the executive management and employees of GPIC that must be singled out as the major forces that have brought about these achievements. These unique qualities of the GPIC workforce are the pillars on which the future of the company can be founded. There is no doubt that the people of GPIC form the golden key to the company's future success and achievement.

Started in March 2007, IEEE Student Branches Industry Relations Program is a new initiative which provides financial, guidance, material and speaker support for activities organized by IEEE Student Branches.

The only condition to be able to apply for support is to include industry relations in these activities. In a general sense, a wide range of activities such as sponsorships, technical trips, company talks are all within the scope of activities that can be supported by ISBIR Program. Student volunteers pioneering the program think that collaboration with other Student Branches or even other student organizations is a very big plus in support applications. Over 20 student branches have been supported by ISBIR Program in the last few months. More information can be found on ISBIR website at:

The program also aims at promoting the IEEE and its membership benefits in the industry world by participating in conferences and fairs including companies. Consequently, IEEE members all over the world can use the benefits and the facilities offered by the industry world. Please refer to ISBIR website for more information at
