Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company was
established in December 1979 as a joint venture
between GCC member states for the manufacture of
fertilisers and petrochemicals. The joint
venture is equally owned by the Government of
the Kingdom of Bahrain, Saudi Basic Industries
Corporation, and Petrochemical Industries
Company, Kuwait.
GPIC uses natural gas which is readily available
in Bahrain as a feedstock for the production of
1,200 tonnes daily of Ammonia (400,000 tonnes
per annum), 1,700 tonnes daily of Urea (600,000
tonnes per annum) and 1,200 tonnes of Methanol
(400,000 tonnes per annum). In addition to the
production plants the GPIC Complex, which was
built in Sitra on a reclaimed area of 60
hectares, comprises utilities plants,
maintenance workshops, offices, stores and
laboratories. The company employs 474 people of
whom 80% are Bahrainis.
The company has a Board of Directors comprising
representatives of the three shareholding
states. The Board of Directors is chaired by HE
Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Advisor to His
Highness the Prime Minister for Industrial and
Oil Affairs and GPIC Chairman. The company's

Jawahery, General Manager.
GPIC's achievements are numerous and the company
is proud to have won many significant awards. At
local level, GPIC has won HH the Prime

GPIC is considered a role model in the
protection of the environment as it is the first
industrial company to use practical
demonstration projects to verify the
eco-friendliness of its operations. A fish farm,
bird sanctuary and palm tree plantations have
already been established in this regard at the
GPIC site. The company achieved another first in
the Kingdom of Bahrain with the introduction of
environmental research grants to secondary

Started in March 2007, IEEE Student Branches
Industry Relations Program is a new initiative
which provides financial, guidance, material and
speaker support for activities organized by IEEE
Student Branches.
The only condition to be able to apply for
support is to include industry relations in
these activities. In a general sense, a wide
range of activities such as sponsorships,

the scope of activities that can be supported by
