ABSTRACT.

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the efficacy of Clegg Impact Hammer for estimating the strength of compacted soils by conducting a comparative study between CBR and Clegg Impact Hammer Tests. This study was carved out in two phases. In Phase 1, compacted marl soil samples with three different compactive efforts were tested for CBR and Clegg Impact Hammer tests. Phase 2 focused on performing field CBR and Impact test on some preselected locations. Results of this investigation indicate that the Clegg Impact Values (CIV), correlate very well with CBR values for both field and laboratory tests. The best correlation was, however obtained at the fifth blow. Moreover, the Clegg Impact values (CIV), correlated exponentially very well with CBR values. Therefore the Clegg Impact Hammer device can be a viable alternative and/or supplement to the CBR test.
